Advising for Majors

Declaring a Major & Being Assigned an Advisor

Students may contact Becky Harris to complete a major declaration form and be assigned an SPLH advisor. Students then need to complete the Plan of Study tutorial (see below). The student then e-mails their plan of study to their assigned SPLH advisor and requests an advising appointment.

SPLH Plan of Study Tutorial

This tutorial must be completed before the student’s first advising appointment with an SPLH advisor. At the first advising appointment, the advisor will modify and approve the plan of study. The plan of study is then archived in the student’s departmental file.

Getting Involved in Undergraduate Research

SPLH uses a centralized matching process for undergraduate research. Each semester around enrollment time (e.g., approximately October 1 and March 1), an application is sent to all SPLH majors listing the faculty available to mentor research projects in the upcoming semester. If you are ready to start research in the upcoming semester, simply complete the application and turn it in by the deadline (e.g., approximately November 1 and April 1). Shortly after the deadline, you will be notified whether your application was accepted, and (if accepted) you will receive your mentor match and enrollment instructions. Questions can be directed to your advisor or the SPLH Undergraduate Research Coordinator (Holly Storkel, hstorkel@ku.edu).
