Advising & Mentorship

Meet Your Academic Advisor

We have a team of knowledgeable advisors from Jayhawk Academic Advising. They will be available to assist you with academic advising, particularly in the area of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) requirements. You will be assigned to an advisor upon being admitted to KU. It is recommended students meet with their academic advisor at least once a semester.

Students assigned College Academic Advisor are listed under their Success Team in Jayhawk GPS

Students can schedule an appointment with their advisor through Jayhawk GPS or by contacting Jayhawk Academic Advising at (785) 864-2834 or advising@ku.edu

Jayhawk Academic Advising also offers drop-in advising each week (no appointment required). Schedule a drop-in advising appointment.

Being Assigned an SPLH Faculty Mentor

In addition to your academic advisor, each SPLH student is paired with a faculty mentor from the SPLH department. Faculty mentors provide guidance on career preparation, graduate school planning, and opportunities for involvement in research, clinical experiences, and student organizations such as KU NSSLHA

Your mentorship assignment will be emailed to you at the start of the semester. Be aware that faculty mentor assignments may change over time; if this occurs, you will be notified. A helpful approach is to meet with your academic advisor first to map out your plan of study, and then follow up with your faculty mentor to discuss your long-term academic and career goals.

Declaring your SPLH major

Advising can do this with you. Please make an appointment with them to declare your major. Students can schedule an appointment with them either online through JayhawkGPS or by calling Jayhawk Academic Advising at (785) 864-2834 or emailing advising@ku.edu

Completing your plan of study

Your advisor can also assist you with this. After you have created a plan of study, you should go over it with your faculty mentor.

  • In the semester before you plan to graduate, meet with Advising for a graduation check.
  • Advising is also available to help you with questions about classes and enrollment to meet graduation requirements throughout your undergraduate career.

Once you have declared your major, department staff will assign you an SPLH faculty mentor. Your faculty mentor is available to help you select electives, complementary minors and majors, and co-curricular activities as well as answer questions about graduate school and careers post-graduation.  After meeting with Advising, please e-mail your plan of study to your assigned SPLH faculty mentor and request an advising appointment with your SPLH faculty mentor. You should also visit the opportunities section to learn about co-curricular activities to discuss with your mentor.

Graduate Students

MA SLP students will be assigned a faculty advisor based on their campus preference and their preferred subject of interest. These advisors will be with them through the duration of the program and will help them complete their plan of study and ensure they are on track to graduate.

PhD students are advised primarily by their chosen faculty mentor, with additional input from members of their committees. Potential students choose a faculty advisor during the admission process. Admitted students will meet with their advisor at least once a semester to update their plan of study. This allows students to stay on track to graduate, while ensuring they take courses relevant to their area of study.

Applying for Graduate School

Students should begin thinking about applying to graduate school in the Spring of their Junior year. Please review the Graduate School Application Tutorial for a timeline of activities and make an appointment with your faculty mentor to discuss your graduate school application plans.
